What’s the Best Rep Speed for Building Abdominal Definition?

Getting firm, defined abs isn’t easy, especially for females. It takes focused exercise to hypertrophy the ab muscles as well as fat loss to unveil the muscles you’ve developed to show. Plus, it takes patience, dedication, and the right exercises to get those ab muscles to show through.
When you work your abs, you probably do a variety of ab-focused exercises, including crunches. Crunches are a classic abdominal exercise. Straight crunches target primarily the rectus abdominis while oblique crunches hone in on the oblique muscles that run down each side of your abdomen.
One of the variables you can adjust when you do abdominal crunches is rep speed, the time it takes to complete a full repetition. You might think that using a slow rep speed is best for working the ab muscles since slow reps limit momentum, however, a study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research calls this idea into question. | continue reading |

Do you run? If so, you’re at higher risk of a common condition called shin splints. If you’ve experienced it before, you know how they can be a persistent and pesky problem that makes even a short run unpleasant. Shin splints come from repeated trauma and “wear and tear” to the muscles and tendons that surround the tibia bone, the larger bone in the lower leg.
Surprisingly, experts aren’t sure exactly what causes shin splints, whether they’re due to trauma to the periosteum, the sheath that surrounds the tibia, or inflammation and trauma to the tendons or muscles in the area of the shin. What’s clear is that they’re typically brought on by overuse. Shin splints are also called medial tibial stress syndrome, an appropriate name considering they come from repeated stress on the tissues around the tibia. You don’t have to run to develop shin splints. If you do any type of vigorous, high-impact exercise, you’re at risk. However, shin splints are most common in runners.
You’re more likely to develop shin splints if you increase your running mileage too quickly or tackle a new exercise program too aggressively. In general, you shouldn’t increase the distance that you run by more than 10% per week. This gives your muscles and tendons a chance to adapt to going longer distances. Shin splints are also more common when first starting an exercise or running program or if you try to tackle a longer distance than you’re accustomed to. It can also happen if you suddenly increase the frequency with which you work out. | continue reading |

Today (5-30-17) we wanted to give everyone another project update on the Fit Tower™  DVDs. We're happy to say we finished the authoring and proofing of all three Fit Tower™  DVDs  a few days ago. We also spent the weekend working on the vocal to ratio music levels for each video. This is difficult to do because not everyone uses the same  system or TV, computer,mobile device,etc., and some of you have systems  with speakers and surround sound and some of you just use the internal speakers on your TV or device. This final tweak should be done today or tomorrow and masters will then be sent to the duplicator. However, we will not be able to give you a ship date until we have approved check discs and the duplicator has finished and shipped the DVDs to us. This will take several weeks. 

Lastly, we know everyone is excited to see video clips and that should happen perhaps end of this week, but more than likely next week. As things develop we will update you on when we think shipping will begin. Thanks for your patience. We're excited to bring you three new Cathe videos!

Sleep serves so many functions that are important for health, some of which are still being discovered. For example, recent research shows that sleep helps your brain “detoxify,” remove toxic metabolic by-products that build up along with damaged or misfolded proteins. How does it do this? Inside your brain is a special lymphatic system called the g-lymphatics. As you sleep, these channels open up and drain toxins from your brain. Pretty amazing, huh?
Along with its role in detoxifying, sleep plays a number of vital roles – it helps consolidate memories and bolster immune function. We also know that sleep plays a key role in weight control. If you’re trying to lose weight and shortchanging yourself on sleep, you may have a harder time reaching your ideal body weight. In one study, dieters that reduced the number of hours they slept over a 2-week period, the amount of body fat they lost dropped by 55%, even when they ate the same diet.
One way curtailing sleep works against weight loss is by boosting appetite. Studies show that sleeping too little markedly impacts the activity of two major appetite hormones, leptin and ghrelin. Leptin is a hormone that signals your brain that you have sufficient fat stores and don’t need to eat more. Ghrelin has the opposite effect – it boosts appetite, particularly for foods high in carbs or fat. What’s more, when you’re sleep-deprived, your ability to resist sugary temptations is compromised and you find yourself reaching for whatever is available. More often than not, it’s something that wouldn’t make the list of healthiest foods. When you’re tired, how motivated are you to seek out or cook a healthy meal? Vitamin D is dubbed the “sunshine vitamin,” an appropriate name since the number one source of vitamin D is exposure to sunlight. It’s not as if the sun’s rays actually contain vitamin D. Instead, a substance called dehydrocholesterol each of us has on the surface of our skin is converted by sunlight to a vitamin D precursor. Once your skin makes the precursor, it’s modified by enzymes in your liver and kidneys to the active form of vitamin D called 1,25-dehydroxyvitamin D. So, you get vitamin D via a rather round-about path that begins with exposure to sunlight.
